COINS OF THE ROMANS - VIRTUAL MUSEUM

The coinage of the Roman Empire is of great importance in understanding the monetary policy, politics and current events in Biblical times.

After his defeat of Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, Augustus Caesar became the first Roman Emperor. He ruled wisely until his death in AD 14. It was during his reign in c. 6 BC that Christ was born. Augustus' stepson Tiberius Caesar succeeded him on the throne. It was during the reign of Tiberius that the ministry, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ occurred. Tiberius is the "Caesar" referred to in the Gospel accounts of Christ.

In spite of the importance of the Romans to the New Testament, only four emperors are mentioned directly in the Biblical account, they are Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius and Nero. Nero is not mentioned by name, but is only referred to as "Caesar."  However, Roman history is also Christian history and as a result the entire Roman period will be covered in the section of the Virtual Museum. Because Roman coinage is so extensive, this room has been divided into several sub-sections that will cover various periods in Roman history.
